2021 sees the centenary of the use of Chequers by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It was given to the nation after the First World War by Lord Lees, one of Lloyd George’s ministers back in 1921 and initially was used as somewhere for the ruling Prime Minister to go to rest, relax and unwind from the duties of governing the nation and for them to get away from Parliament.

Subsequently Chequers has been used to host and entertain visiting rules and important guests, as well as hosting various dinners for ministers too.

An invitation to join the Prime Minister at Chequers has become the biggest honour that visiting foreign leaders receive. Examples including Tony Blair hosting US Presidents Bill Clinton and his successor George W Bush at Chequers for private talks.

Another calendar milestone in 2021 as Chequers celebrates its centenary in the role as the ‘House of Peace’ as it has been dubbed by Boris Johnson.
