2021 Emma Raducanu Creates Tennis History

UK tennis teen sensation, Emma Raducanu, wins the US Open Grand Slam Tennis Tournament at her first attempt, becoming the first qualifier in a Grand Slam to reach a final and win the title.  She also becomes the first British winner of a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade back in 1977.

2001 The 911 Terrorist Attacks

A series of coordinated terrorist attacks took place in the USA killing 2,977 people using four aircraft hijacked by 19 members of al-Qaeda. Two planes were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Centre in New York City, a third into The Pentagon and a fourth into a field in Pennsylvania.  Each year on this day, people take to social media to share their thoughts, memories and remember all those who died, were injured or were affected by these tragic events.

1895 The FA Cup Was Stolen!

Thieves broke into a shop in Birmingham and stole the original Football Association Challenge Cup.  The FA Cup had been on display in the shop window after Aston Villa had beaten their Midland’s rivals Wolves to win the cup  earlier in the year.

1850 Jenny Lind's First Concert In USA

PT Barnum promotes and hosts the first concert in New York City by Jenny Lind, affectionately known as the ‘Swedish Nightingale.’

1609 Discovery Of Manhattan Island

Explorer Henry Hudson sailed into New York harbour and discovered Manhattan Island and the Hudson River.

1297 William Wallace Defeated English Forces

The Battle of Stirling Bridge concluded with the defeat of the English by Scottish hero William Wallace.
